Finally, the prize for the highest intellectual quality Defence debate (but in front of one of the smallest audiences), must go to Dr Julian Lewis MP, who reprised his regular debate with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament on the need for the Deterrent. Full marks to CND for arranging this debate, as well as for the totally civilised and professional standard of the entire session. But for an understanding of the minutiae of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, the pros and cons of the UK becoming a ‘virtual nuclear State’, and the technicalities of the Vanguard replacement programme, Dr Lewis won hands down.
